Battle Of Champions For Third Place, Blue Eagles Prevailed

The last day of 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup tips off featuring the NCAA Champion San Beda Red Lions versus the UAAP and Filoil Flying V defending champion, Ateneo Blue Eagles battling for third place of this tournament.

The game started with the usual starting line up for Ateneo with Kiefer Ravena and Greg Slaughter leading the Blue Eagles while the Red Lions started with unusual starting five with three small guards playing all the same time, Anjo Caram, Baser Amer and Ryusei Koga. It’s a run-and-gun game for San Beda early in the first half but unfortunately, they can’t convert because of the good defense of Ateneo big men led by Slaughter and Chua.

It is a close fight until the first half with Ateneo leading only by four points but the second unit of Ateneo started the third quarter and led the Blue Eagles barrage that sealed the victory for the Blue Eagles 66-55 to grab the third place of 2012 Filoil Flying V Tournament.

SAN BEDA SIDE NOTES:

San Beda Red Lions won their first 9 games of this tournament only to lose their last 2 games to end up fourth place. The first 8 games of the Red Lions are won thanks to their leading scorer Julius Armon which decided to stay in the US, right after their training camp to try D-League. Armon was suspended for Season 88 of NCAA for 1 year because of a brawl incident between Red Lions and the Volleyball team of San Sebastian last December.

The San Beda Red Cubs captured the Junior Basketball Crown of 2012 Filoil Flying V tournament beating Letran Squires 79-77 winning their third straight Junior Championships.

Rookie-MVP, Tower of Power Benjie Paras was named as Assistant Coach for the San Beda Red Lions. Both him and San Beda coach Ronnie Magsanoc played for San Beda Red Cubs during their high school days and they both transferred to UP and gave the Maroons a UAAP Men’s Basketball Championship.

It is rumored that San Beda import Ola Adeogun’s suspension was reduced from 1 year to just 5 game suspension. Hopefully same with Armon so he can still play in this coming Season 88 of the NCAA.

2012 Filoil Flying V Special Awards:

Seniors Mythical 5: Bobby Ray Parks (NU), Emmanuel Mbe (NU), Norbert Torres (DLSU), Greg Slaughter (ADMU), Kiefer Ravena (ADMU)

Best Defensive Player: Emmanuel Mbe (NU)
